In recent years, there has been a remarkable advancement in biomedical ultrasound technology, particularly in the field of miniaturized transducers. These innovations have paved the way for precise and minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of increasingly concerned diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. In this talk, micro/nanotechnology enabled small aperture ultrasound transducers were designed, fabricated and tested for precision biomedical ultrasound imaging, therapy and drug delivery. In specific, we investigated high frequency transducers for advanced intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging. Small aperture forward-looking and vortex transducers were successfully demonstrated in-vitro for effective microbubbles and nanodroplets mediated intravenous sonothrombolysis. Moreover, miniaturized transducers enabled sonoporation was successful in enhancing localized drug delivery. These new findings suggest that precision biomedical ultrasound via minimal invasion can be significant in advanced ultrasound imaging, therapy, and drug delivery for unprecedented disease diagnosis and treatment.
